DAY 4 VLORE – APOLLONIA – BERAT – VLORE (APPROX – 95 KM ONE WAY)

Start your day with a step back in time - visit the ancient ruins of Apollonia. Founded over 2500 years ago, Apollonia was an important Greek colony and one of the most prosperous cities of ancient Illyria. Wander through the archaeological park, imagining what life was like here in the 5th century BC. Admire the well-preserved theater, council hall, and residential areas featuring intricate floor mosaics. The on-site museum exhibits artifacts that offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the Romans who later inhabited this important trading port.

Next, pass through picturesque olive groves on your way to the historic town of Berat. Enter another world as you step into the beautifully preserved Ottoman-era neighborhood of Berat, aptly named the "City of a Thousand Windows". Atop the hill overlooking the town lies a 13th century fortress citadel, its walls enclosing a maze of cobblestone alleyways and gorgeous wooden-balconied homes. Stop at the lead-plaster covered White Mosque, dating back to the 15th century, and admire the exquisite 17th century frescoes adorning the Holy Trinity Church. Take in panoramic views of Berat and the surrounding valley from the citadel walls.

Spend free time exploring more of Berat's architecture and culture before returning to your accommodations in Vlore, with memories of two fascinating historic towns to reminisce over dinner.

Overnight in Vlore – 4⭐ Hotel (B,D)

DAY 5 VLORE – ARDENICA – DURRES – TIRANA (APPROX – 170 KM)

After breakfast, head to the small hilltop village of Ardenica, located in central Albania. Ardenica is renowned for its 13th century Benedictine monastery, which sits prominently above the village offering magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes.

Constructed in 1206, the Ardenica Monastery served as an important religious site for locals during the Middle Ages. Its architecture features thick stone walls and austere design common of monasteries from this period. However, it is most famous for its collection of Byzantine-style frescoes painted directly onto the chapel walls between the 13th-15th centuries. The elaborate frescoes depict biblical scenes and saints and are considered some of the finest examples of medieval Orthodox art in Albania. Legend says this was the site of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg's wedding in 1443, cementing his role as Albania's national hero.

Next, continue your trip west along the coast to the historic port city of Durres. As Albania's largest and oldest city, Durres has a fascinating history spanning over two millennia. Founded as an Ancient Greek colony in the 6th century BC, it later grew to become a major Roman settlement known as Dyrrachium. Visit the most impressive structure, the immense 3rd century amphitheater, which could seat up to 15,000 spectators for gladiatorial combats and events, making it one of the largest in the Balkans.

Next, continue to Tirana, the capital of Albania, embark on a guided tour of the capital, boasting a blend of Ottoman, Italian, and communist-style architecture, creating a visually inspiring tapestry for visitors:

Skanderbeg Square's neoclassical grandeur, Ethem Bey Mosque's Ottoman elegance, the timeless Clock Tower, the modern Opera House, the historic National Museum of History, the intriguing Pyramid, the communist legacy at Bunk’ Art 2, and a glimpse into Enver Hoxha's Villa—an immersive journey through diverse styles, eras, and stories.

The day will conclude with a farewell dinner.
